Ways to Control Erosion at Construction Sites

Choosing a site for building a house, you should know exactly what kind of soil is hidden under the sod. The type and depth of the foundation of the future structure depend on this. Ignorance of soil features often leads to the destruction of a newly constructed building.

The Main Thing to Take into Account

Years of experience shows that before proceeding with construction, find out what should be the foundation on this type of soil. It is better to do this before acquiring a land plot, because due to the unfavorable soil, construction may be prohibitively expensive and generally meaningless. In other words, it is better to carry out all geotechnical calculations in advance, to make a preliminary geotechnical feasibility study, to study the geological basis than to analyze the causes and eliminate the consequences of the accident.

Problems That May Arise Due to Errors or Failure to Perform Tests and Research?

  • destruction of walls, ceilings, and foundations due to the subsidence of the whole or individual sections of the building;
  • the weakening of certain parts of the foundations due to flooding and excessive moisture due to ignorance of the composition of the soil and, therefore, unfulfilled measures to divert (drainage);
  • exceeded and reinforced structures where they are not necessary, which leads to cost overruns, in fact, money down the drain.

How to Deal with Erosion at Construction Sites

Erosion is a natural violation of the integrity of the soil, with its subsequent displacement. Erosion prone land is a thankless place for building. Firstly, the construction itself must be accompanied by the strengthening of the ground. Secondly, the owner of such a structure will have to constantly monitor the condition of the soil.

Methods of Erosion Control to Use

  • Compaction. This is a common pneumatic tamper or tamper with special plates, in some cases, crushed stone is added.
  • Creating a pillow. In cases where it is difficult to reinforce the soil, the layer of unreliable soil is removed and replaced with more stable (for example, sand or gravel). The thickness of such a pillow is usually 10 or more centimeters.
  • Silicization is used for fine dust-like sand. In such cases, the mixture of liquid glass with various chemical additives should be injected into the ground. After priming, it will acquire a good bearing capacity.
  • Erosion control products: Erosion Control Blankets and Turf Reinforcement Mats
